To the graveyard or exiled?

Asked by Come at me dot bro 11 years ago

If I have a 1/1 creature, and my opponent casts an instant that would exile it, could I in response burn it with an instant myself to make it go into the graveyard, or does it still exile after my burn resolves?

Assuming the 1/1 has no relevant abilities (like indestructible), then yes, that would work. You would burn your creature, then before the exile resolves, State-Based Actions would be checked, your creature would go to the graveyard, and then the exile spell would fizzle, as it no longer has a target.

It is worth noting that this is basically giving your opponent a 2-for-1, and that it is almost certainly not worth it.

It depends on if your opponent's spell would resolve. If you Shock your Voice of Resurgence while your opponent's Pillar of Flame is on the stack, the 2 damage from Shock will kill it before the Pillar gets a chance to resolve.

What happens first on the stack will happen first so the creature would be exile and you'll have waisted a great burn spell to use on their creatures. Remember the stack with every effect that happens.

@darkfarrel212The stack resolves "Last in, first out". So if they respond to the opponent's exiling spell wih their own attempt to burn the target, the burn will resolve first (killing the creature) and the opponent's spell will do nothing (barring special circumstance as usual).

DakFarrel212 - that's exactly opposite of what happens. The stack functions with a "last in, first out" mentality, so the most recent thing on the stack, not the oldest, resolves first. In this case [email protected]'s burn spell would resolve first, then his opponent's exiling spell.

Depends on who's turn it is, if it's your turn, it goes to the graveyard. If it's your enemy's, it gets exiled.

MonsterFinder221 - that's exactly wrong as well. The stack resolves last in, first out regardless of whose turn it is.

You're probably confusing yourself with the idea of replacement effects or triggered abilities. When you're trying to apply multiple triggers and replacement effects controlled my multiple players, then player order can matter, but this scenario has nothing to do with them.

Excellent, thanks for the answer, I wasn't sure if going to the graveyard (state-based actions as raithe000 aptly put it) happed before instant speed or not. Much appreciated.

And in case you were wondering, it was in reference to an attempt at exiling my gray merchant (I know its not a 1/1, just made things simpler), which I instead killed and whip of erebos'd him out next turn for the win. So it was worth it to prevent the exile.
