Timing interaction between Yenna, Redtooth Regent and Next of Kin

Asked by CamraMaan 6 months ago

Say Yenna, Redtooth Regent (could be any creature, but this is for a Yenna deck) is in play with Next of Kin on a creature with a higher casting cost, and someone board wipes, killing all my creatures. Will Yenna go back to the command zone in time for Next of Kin to be able to bring her back? My assumption is yes, but I'm foggy on the timing of this. And my apologies, because I feel like I've asked a similar timing question that should answer this, but I'm not finding it... As always, a preemptive thank you for your help!

TL;DR - Yes, you'll be able to bring out your commander with Next of Kin.

Both Yenna, Redtooth Regent and the enchanted creature die (putting them both in the graveyard) at the same time, triggering Next of Kin (but not putting the trigger on the stack yet). The board wipe finishes resolving putting itself in the graveyard next. Then State Based Actions are checked putting Next of Kin into the graveyard and allowing you to move Yenna, Redtooth Regent to your command zone if you wish. Next Next of Kin's trigger is finally added to the stack (along with any other triggers that are waiting to be added, in APNAP order. Any triggers with targets can choose targets with cards current zones in mind). There's now a round of priority and, assuming nobody responds, Next of Kin's trigger will resolve. Yenna, Redtooth Regent is back in the command zone, so it's a valid choice for the ability.

I thought so, just had a brain fart and couldn't confirm it in my head. Much appreciated!
