The Stack?

Asked by Wyrbak 7 years ago

This is a timing question. I have several 1/1 tokens in play and my opponent Crypt Rats for one. Can I play Lightning Volley and tap all my creatures do deal the damage before they die from the rats?

Assuming your creatures don't have summoning sickness, yes.

Your opponent activates Crypt Rats's ability. This ability is placed onto the stack. You can then respond to it by casting Lightning Volley. When Lightning Volley resolves (objects on the stack resolve one at a time), you can then activate your creatures' new abilities still in response to Crypt Rats's ability.

Yes. Most things use the stack and can be responded to. Mana abilities, playing a land, and turning a morph card face up are the big three things to remember don't use the stack.

Yeah, if they're able to tap, you can use Lightning Volley to deal the damage. Think of it like casting a creature that would set off a trigger ability. You cast it's on the stack, gets countered, and so the trigger doesn't go off. It's the same formula just with different card types.

That scenario you laid out has no parallels to what he is asking.
