Thalia and Daze

How does the interaction between cards that raise the CMC of a card and cards that have alternate casting costs, like daze having 'return an island to your hand instead of paying for it.'

Note that Daze and other similar cards specifically says "rather than pay (this card's) mana cost". A card's "mana cost" is represented by the symbols printed in the upper-right corner, and any effect that lets you cast something without paying its mana cost is only letting you bypass that specific part of the cost. Any other additional costs will still be applied.

Link all cards in your question.
Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
Daze
No effect ever raises the CMC of anything. CMC is always calculated based on the symbols printed in the upper right corner of the card (its mana cost). The only time CMC can change is if it contains an
, in which case you use X to calculate the CMC of a spell on the stack.
Thalia, Guardian of Thraben creates an additional cost. Daze has an alternate cost. Additional costs apply regardless of whether you choose to pay the mana cost or the alternate cost of a spell. You'll still have to pay
more.
