Teferi's Protection + Admonition Angel

Asked by Andromedus 5 years ago

If I have Admonition Angel in play, and I cast Teferi's Protection , does the landfall ETB trigger on Admonition Angel when the lands (and the angel) all phase back in together?

Alternatively (if that does not trigger the angel's ETB) what if I have two Admonition Angel s in play, and I drop a land, exiling one angel with the other angel's ETB ability. I then cast Teferi's Protection . What happens? I assume the exiled angel now returns - does his landfall ETB now trigger when all my lands (and the other angel) phase back in?

Thank you for the assistance.

Phasing in/out doesn't cause things to change zones, so it won't trigger anything that looks for a permanent leaving or entering the battlefield.

"Phased in" / "phased out" are just two different sides of a status that a card can have, similar to "tapped" / "untapped". The default state for any permanent is phased in and it will only phase out when some effect specifically makes it phase out. A phased out permanent is still on the battlefield but the game basically ignores it until it phases in again.

In your second example the exiled angel does return to the battlefield because the "for as long as you control..." duration for the other angel's effect ended. The angel that returned to the battlefield will be phased in.

I don't know if this will matter, but just in case it comes up while you're looking for answers somewhere else: In old versions of the rules (more than 10 years at this point) the game used a separate "phased out zone" to handle this, but it had some odd side rules that made several things interact with each other in ways you wouldn't expect. For example, phasing in didn't trigger "enters the battlefield" abilities but phasing out did trigger "leaves the battlefield" abilities. It led to weird and confusing situations, so eventually the phasing rules were revised to what we have today.

Great, thank you for the information. I was looking for a way to make Admonition Angel into a board sweeper but alas it's back to the drawing board for me.
