Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir + Knowledge Pool. Does the combo lockdown you too?

Asked by Noloic 12 years ago

The Knowledge Pool says : "Whenever a player casts a spell from his or her hand, that player exiles it. If the player does, he or she may cast another nonland card exiled with Knowledge Pool without paying that card's mana cost.". With Teferi, whenever your opponents casts something,it's exiled and they can't cast anything from the Knowledge Pool . But what when YOU cast something and nothing is still imprinted on the Knowledge Pool ? Does your spell just remain exiled or what? I need to know it... thanks in advantage.

Every card exiled by Knowledge Pool counts as being "imprinted" for the purposes of its ability. It would take a very strange series of events to un-exile all the cards in the pool and prevent any more from being exiled with it (it's probably impossible).

If somehow u didnt have anything imprinted on the pool then yes, it would remain exiled and u would play nothing. But as Epochalyptik stated, everything u cast gets imprinted to the pool. So essentially u should never run out of "knowledge".

Actually, that was Rhadamanthus who posted.

Note that Knowledge Pool says "may cast another nonland card exiled with Knowledge Pool ." That card doesn't have to be one originally imprinted on Knowledge Pool - any exiled card under Knowledge Pool will do.

If you want to lock someone with a Knowledge Pool combo, Curse of Exhaustion works, because they can only cast 1 spell per turn so whenever they cast a spell it gets exiled by knowledge pool, and since they are only allowed to play one spell per turn they can't play any of the cards knowledge pool exiles. I think they only way they can even play cards is with flashback, since you exile the card from your graveyard to cast it, but other than that it locks you down.

Flashback doesn't exile the card when you cast it, it exiles the card when the spell resolves. But knowledge pool's second ability only triggers when a spell is cast from a hand. Casting one from the graveyard (or from exile) doesn't trigger the Pool.

Yeah, Teferi is a jerk with the pool

So what this lock out does is your opponent casts a spell and it gets exiled by Knowledge Pool and its ability triggers allowing them to cast another spell exiled by it. Since the Knowledge Pool trigger is on the stack, the second spell will be cast at instant speed. Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir specifically prevents your opponents from doing this, therefore they are unable to cast any spells. You however are able to play all spells as though they had flash allowing you to continually play spells. So no the combo doesn't lock you down. And remember, Any card exiled by Knowledge Pool 's ETB ability can be cast by any player whenever they play a spell. So all those spells from your opponent getting held up by your lockdown can be cast by you.
