Tainted Remedy = mutual death?

Asked by Zacoly 8 years ago

If I cast Cruel Feeding on an opponent's creature and it kills me but lifelinks enough to kill it's owner via Tainted Remedy is the game then a draw? Or does my death negate the stack after combat damage kills me?

Lifelink is technically assigned/calculated before regular damage correct?

Could I get a ruling on this?

Because none of this involves the stack, it would be a draw. Damage and lifelink are simultaneous, and Tainted Remedy is simply a replacement effect. So you would take that much damage and they would lose that much at the same time. State-based actions see you are both at zero and you both lose the game.

However, if it was something like Spirit Link instead you would be dead since state-based actions will see you at a zero life total and that triggered ability won't get a chance to resolve.

Lifelink is a static ability and Tainted Remedy creates a replacement effect, neither of these use the stack, so once damage is calculated both players have 0 or less life and the game ends in a draw.

This is partially why lifelink, the static ability, is distinct from the triggered ability created by Spirit Loop. It also matters who controls what effect in regards to who gains the life. Had you enchanted the creature with something like Spirit Loop and it dealt damage to you you would gain the life and not your opponent, but if it was lethal damage state based actions would have removed you from the game before the trigger could resolve.

That was uncanny.
