State-Based Actions and Tarmogoyf

Asked by Emzed 11 years ago

Assume i control two Tarmogoyf s which are both 0/1 as there are no cards in graveyards. My opponent casts Pyroclasm . After it has resolved, both Tarmogoyfs are 1/2 (a sorcery is in the graveyard now) with 2 damage on them. Now, before anything else happens, state based actions are checked. Now i would like to know what happens:
1) Both Tarmogoyf s go to the graveyard simultaneously for having lethal damage marked on them, or
2) one Tarmogoyf goes to the graveyard, making the second one 2/3 before state based actions are checked on the latter. Therefore, i keep one of my guys.
I believe the first scenario is the correct one, but i would like to be sure about it.

All creatures that die to lethal damage are put in the graveyard at the same time, including any of your opponent's creatures that may have been killed by the Pyroclasm . So neither goyf gets a buff from the other one.

When a state-based action check is performed, it checks for all applicable conditons simultaneously. The check will return a TRUE value for both Tarmogoyf s having lethal damage marked on them, upon which they will both be destroyed. Then the check will be run again to see whether any other conditons have been met.
