Stack Question (Languish vs Eerie Interlude)
Asked by RainbowGuts 8 years ago
Say my opponent casts Languish and I respond with Eerie Interlude would my creatures be safe or does the Languish go first? Also, with end of turn, does Languish last until after all my creatures are returned from exile?

Answer 1:
Your spell will resolve first, since you cast it in response to Languish. Your creatures will all be exiled when Languish resolves.
Answer 2:
Whenever an ability says a duration, what the effect actually is determines if it will apply to all creatures for the whole duration, or just the creatures in play as the effect resolves.
Example: You cast a spell that says "creatures you control have hexproof until end of turn." This would apply to all creatures you control, even ones that enter after the spell has already resolved. This is because the effect is temporarily changing the game rules: Your creatures cannot be targeted until the end of the turn.
Example: Your opponent casts Languish, and you respond with Eerie Interlude. Your creatures are exiled then return at the beginning of the next end step. They are not affected by the -4/-4 because that effect does not affect any game rules, it is directly effecting the creatures.
611.2c If a continuous effect generated by the resolution of a spell or ability modifies the characteristics or changes the controller of any objects, the set of objects it affects is determined when that continuous effect begins. After that point, the set wont change. (Note that this works differently than a continuous effect from a static ability.) A continuous effect generated by the resolution of a spell or ability that doesnt modify the characteristics or change the controller of any objects modifies the rules of the game, so it can affect objects that werent affected when that continuous effect began.
