So I'm gonna just deal some damage here.

I remember seeing somewhere once that if a spell targeted a player, it could target the Planeswalker as well.

Let's say I have Sorin, Lord of Innistrad on the field, and my opponent plays Lava Axe . Can he target Sorin, or can he only target me?

He only can target you. You cannot target a planeswalker, technically. However, you can redirect damage to him.

So yes, he can redirect a Lava Axe to Sorin or you.

And to Redirect you just declare "I'm targeting you, but the damage is going to your planeswalker"?

I think the planeswalker acts as an additional player. And if thats the case yes, you can target Sorin. Thats how I've always played. if that is wrong, well thats awesome!

Combat damage is done to a player or a planeswalker. To deal combat damage to a planeswalker, you simply declare that you are attacking that planeswalker.

To deal noncombat damage to a planeswalker, you target the player and redirect it to a planeswalker. This is pretty much done as aMNKYonSTEROIDS said. You pretty much just declare that the damage is going towards Sorin and it happens.

Planeswalkers are NOT additional players, even though some player-specific cards (like Lava Axe ) can affect them through redirection.

So if you have Witchbane Orb on the field, they couldn't hit Sorin, because they'd have to target you before redirecting damage.
