Simple Rules Question - Targeting Graveyard Trespasser with no hand
Asked by vishnarg 2 years ago
Hi,
If I target a Graveyard Trespasser Flip with an Infernal Grasp but Grasp is the last card in my hand, what happens?
Thanks!
Right, makes sense, good thing I didn't try that play! Thanks!

If it helps:
If an effect (like the text of the resolution of an ability or spell) tells you to discard a number of cards greater than you have in your hand, you still have to discard as many as possible to fulfil as much of the effect as possible.
If a cost that must be paid (like the "as an additional cost to cast this spell, discard a card" of a spell, what shows up before the colon in activated abilities, or what you're instructed to pay for a particular effect in a triggered ability (like with ward, and the effect is ‘don't be countered’)) requires you to discard a number of cards greater than you have in your hand, you just can't pay that cost.

Pretty sure Infernal Grasp would just be countered and nothing would happen.
Here's the Ward reminder text from another card that has a discard cost, Westgate Regent -
(Whenever this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, counter it unless that player discards a card.)
