Seraph of the Masses question

Asked by FalloutCat 9 years ago

Ok so I was playing my friend and I overloaded a Mizzium Mortars . He had a 12/12 Seraph of the Masses , but all the creatures died and it was a 1/1. He said the Seraph didn't die because it was a 12/12 when the 4 damage hit it and I said it did because it was a 1/1 with 4 damage marked on it. Does the Seraph die or not?

A creature that is not indestructible will die if it has damage marked on it that is equal or more than its toughness as a state-based action. In this case, the Angel will be dead.

Knowing this might also help: damage stays marked on a creature until the end of the current turn. This means individually non-lethal "packets" of marked damage can accumulate to be lethal together, and changes to a creature's toughness can make previously non-lethal marked damage lethal.
