Scarscale Ritual and Jeskai Ascendancy

Asked by dlanz 11 years ago

I'm more just hoping I'm wrong. I have to apply the -1/-1 from Scarscale Ritual before I can apply the +1/+1 from Jeskai Ascendancy, correct?

The oracle text now says "cast" and not "play": http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=154396

Right. Jeskai Ascendancy triggers after the spell is cast, but in order to cast a spell you have to finish paying the costs. The -1/-1 counter is part of Scarscale Ritual's cost.

Many instances of "play" on older cards have been changed to "cast", but the functional rules meaning hasn't changed. It was part of a rules clean-up to reduce confusion about how certain things work together. Nowadays "cast" is used for spells and "play" is used for lands and effects that can work with either lands or spells.
