Okay i have a creature with undying say Strangleroot Geist and no +1 counters on it. My opponent casts Black Sun's Zenith will undying trigger or will it be put in the graveyard the same way as it would if it had +1 counters?

+1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters are different things. Undying only cares whether or not the creature had +1/+1 counters on it when it died. Other types of counters don't matter. Strangleroot Geist's Undying ability will trigger in your example.

Even though it didnt technically die it was placed in the graveyard for having zero toughness

Yes, undying will trigger when the Strangleroot Geist dies. Undying only doesn't trigger if the creature had any +1/+1 counters on it; a -1/-1 counter is not a +1/+1 counter.

So the Geist dies, the undying triggers, resolves, and the Giest will come back to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.

It died die. "Dying" means a creature went from the graveyard from the battlefield, which the Geist certainly did.

It doesn't matter why the creature died; just that it moved from the battlefield to the graveyard.
