Rules Challenge - Myr Welder
Asked by KrazyCaley 12 years ago
I control Myr Welder
. My opponent controls Ethersworn Adjudicator
. Helvault
is in my graveyard. I exile Helvault
with Myr Welder
, then I use its new 7, T: ability to exile Ethersworn Adjudicator
.
What are all the abilities that Myr Welder now has?
The activated abilities of Helvault (1, T: Exile target creature you control and 7, T: Exile target creature you don't control) and all the activated abilities of Ethersworn Adjudicator (1BW, T: Destroy target creature or enchantment and 2U: Untap ~), plus the ones printed on the card (Imprint: T: Exile target artifact card from a graveyard and ~ has all activated abilities of all cards exiled with it).
Myr Welder 's static ability doesn't specify that you need to exile things with its imprint ability, just that you need to exile them to gain their activated abilities.

Hmm, that's interesting. I figure it doesn't get Ethersworn Adjudicator 's abilities, then, but I'd like to hear the reasoning behind that.

It's own printed ability is the only ability that is Imprint, so only artifacts imprinted by that particular ability will add the abilities, so you have:
Myr Welder
(3)
Arifact Creature - Myr
Imprint: (tap): Exile target artifact card from a graveyard.
(1)(tap): Exile target creature you control.
(7)(tap): Exile target creature you don't control.

@ linkofhyrule - That is close, but you're forgetting one of its abilities, and your justification is not quite correct.

Right, since Ethersworn Adjudicator was exiled with Myr Welder through the use of the Helvault abilities, Myr Welder will have the abilities of the Ethersworn Adjudicator since it was exiled by the Myr Welder .

ahh, yes. the static ability: "Myr Welder has all activated abilities of all cards exiled with it.", so you have:
Myr Welder (3)
Arifact Creature -- Myr
Imprint -- (tap): Exile target artifact card from a graveyard.
Myr Welder has all activated abilities of all cards exiled with it.
(1)(tap): Exile target creature you control.
(7)(tap): Exile target creature you don't control.

heh. just realized, that with card Type shenanigans(such as "target permanent is an Artifact in addition to its other types"), Myr Welder can have Planeswalker abilities, without the drawbacks of being a planeswalker!

derp! nevermind the 'walker abilities, just re-read the Imprint, it's artifact card from a graveyard, so it'll take a great many shenanigans to pull that feat off

linkofhyrule Has the right answer - Myr Welder has all of its native abilities plus the abilities of Helvault . It does NOT have Ethersworn Adjudicator 's ability, because the native abilities of Myr Welder are linked abilities, per Rule 607.2a-
"If an object has an activated or triggered ability printed on it that instructs a player to exile one or more cards and an ability printed on it that refers either to the exiled cards or to cards exiled with [this object], these abilities are linked. The second ability refers only to cards in the exile zone that were put there as a result of an instruction to exile them in the first ability."

Ok I guessed I might have been wrong but I needed that ruling.

Minor nitpick that i just noticed in the phrasing of the situation: "I exile Helvault with Myr Welder , then I use its new 7, T: ability to exile Ethersworn Adjudicator ."
The Welder's Imprint cost is (tap). The Helvault's abilities both have (tap) as part of the cost.
You would need a method to untap the Welder in order to use the (7)(tap) ability, so while you do indeed have the corrected list of abilities in my previous post, you cannot as described exile the Adjudicator at that point in time.

@linkofhyrule - You can just assume it's on different turns, if you like.

So pretty much the Myr Welder doesn't get the abilites of the Ethersworn Adjudicator because it is being exiled BY it, but the Helvault is being exiled WITH it (via imprint ability)?

No, the Welder exiles the Adjudicator and the Vault. It's just that its "has the activated abilities of exiled stuff" ability is linked only to its "exile artifacts in graveyard" ability.

Myr welder has:
T: exile target artifact card from a graveyard.
Myr welder has all activated abilities of all cards exiled with it.
1, T: exile target creature you control.
7, T: exile target creature you don't control.
1WB, T: Destroy target creature or enchantment.
2U: Untap Myr Welder .
This only works if Myr Welder 's ability works for anything it exiles. I checked the gatherer rulings, and there was nothing to suggest this wouldn't work.
