In the case of Fiend Hunter , because the creature coming back is a triggered ability which triggers on the Hunter leaving the battlefield, So when it enters the battlefield, it's ETB ability goes onto the stack, which will exile a creature when it resolves. Then, while the ability is still on the stack, you could remove him (which is where Roon of the Hidden Realm comes in, but you could use any blinking, bouncing, or otherwise removing him from battlefield ability) which will put his leaving the battlefield trigger on the stack ON TOP OF THE FIRST TRIGGER WHICH IS STILL THERE.

So the leaving trigger resolves, and tries to return a creature which doesn't exist because nothing has yet been exiled. THEN the original trigger resolves, exiling the creature.

Now that the "Hunter leaves, exiled thing comes back" trigger is already over and done with, there's no way for it to ever come back, and is exiled permanently.

Fiend Hunter has 2 triggered abilities.

  • the first one exiles a creature, and triggers when it enters the battlefield.

  • the second one brings the creature back, and triggers when it leaves the battlefield.

The way it works, is

  • you play Fiend Hunter and put it's first ability on the stack.
  • Before that ability resolves, You then exile Fiend Hunter , putting it's second ability on the stack.
  • the second ability resolves, but there is no exiled card, so it does nothing.
  • the first ability resolves, and exiles the target creature.
