Restoration Angel flicking an attacking creature
Asked by Denial048 12 years ago
I am nearly 100% sure I am right here, but I thought I would ask anyway.
Player A has a Thragtusk on the field, and Player B has a Vexing Devil . Player A declares Thragtusk as an attacker, then Player B blocks with Vexing Devil . In response, Player A flashes in Restoration Angel , targeting Thragtusk .
My understanding is that Thragtusk will leave then re-enter the battlefield as a new permanent (getting both abilities to activate) and takes no damage from Vexing Devil , at the same time as dealing no damage.
Player B is arguing the point, saying that they will still deal damage to each other. I said that wont happen, due to Thragtusk being a new permanent.
Clarification?
Before the damage step, Player A flashed the Restoration Angel in response to Player B's block declaration.

the Thragtusk to the game is no longer the same Thragtusk that attacked so the epic battle between a super devil and a beast of a beast will not happen at that time.
ravengamer93 If a Restoration Angel was flashed in after the damage step there wouldn't be a Thragtusk for her to save.

Not true, thragtusk could still take all the damage then you could flash it out/in, the lethal dmg restriction doesn't apply to flashing.

@ravengamer93: The Thragtusk would have gone to the Graveyard before you could flash it.

State Based Actions like checking for lethal damage are checked any time a player would pass priority; so before you could play Restoration Angel , Thragtusk would be deadtusk.

In reference to whoever said that lethal damage doesn't apply to flashing, not the OP.

So far I am hearing that my initial thoughts were correct.
TheHorse I assumed it wasn't aimed at me :P

@ravengamer93: Death from lethal damage is a state based action, and SBAs are checked and executed right before a player would get priority. What you're talking about would have been true before the 10th Edition Rules Update, but the way the rules work now has no space in-between damage assignment and damage dealing where players get priority again.

rules issue aside, I think the really amazing thing is that someone let Vexing Devil stay on the field. On topic, either damage can be dealt to both parties and things die, or you flicker the thragtusk and nothing dies but you get your leave play and ETB triggers. if damage is dealt its too late to save him, and if you save him, then no damage is dealt.

I think the only reason Vexing Devil was allowed to come in was due to them playing a multi-player game. We don't play multi's with spell range, and roll a dice to see who we attack each turn, so I am guessing there was 4 players, and non willing to take the 4 damage.
Anyway, so far Ryjhan has answered this the best, but thank you to you all.
