Regarding Hexproof
Asked by Crate 13 years ago
If a creature is enchanted to have hexproof, do cards enchanted to that creature also have hexproof? IE: I had my Jenara, Asura of War equipped with Swiftfoot Boots and Bear Umbra, my friend used a Simic Guildmage to move the Bear Umbra off of Jenara onto another creature I had. At the time his reasoning was that the creature is hexproof, but the enchantment wasn't - which makes sense and we played the match like that. But thinking on it now - it seems like the act would be target Jenara to move an enchantment off of her - so I would like some help here if possible!

Jenara, Asura of War , Swiftfoot Boots , Bear Umbra , Simic Guildmage
Note the following rule:
114.9a Just because an object or player is being affected by a spell or ability doesnt make that object or player a target of that spell or ability. Unless that object or player is identified by the word "target" in the text of that spell or ability, or the rule for that keyword ability, its not a target.
Simic Guildmage's second ability does not target the permanent the Aura is attached to, it targets the Aura.
Also, if an enchantment or equipment gives a creature hexproof, it does not give other equipment or enchantments attached to it hexproof. The enchantment/equipment would specifically state if it did. Properties of object do not carry over to the properties of objects attached to them.

Unfortunately your friend is right.Simic Guildmage expressly says target enchantment so it is targeting the enchantment not Jenara so it was a legal move.
Hexproof is defined as the creature cannot be target by spells or abilities your opponent controls. Since the ability targets the enchantment and not the creature it works.
