Regarding Battalion effect and Silverblade Paladin
Asked by Goalith 12 years ago
I couldn't find the question on MTG Q&A so I sorta need help.
I had a debate with my friend over this question but here is the scenerio:
My friend attacks me with a Firemane Avenger that is soul binded with Silverblade Paladin and a Spark Trooper . I target the Silverblade Paladin with Searing Spear but he Cloudshift it away. I choose NOT to block any of his creatures
Now the question:
- Does Firemane Avenger "battalion" effect trigger?
- If he decides to soul bind his Silverblade Paladin with his Spark Trooper , does the Spark Trooper do 6 damage or 12 damage due to double strike
destroyer1212 says... Accepted answer #2
- The Firemane Avenger battalion effect would still trigger, since it does so the moment he declares all of his attackers.
- Spark Trooper would do 12 damage due to double strike.

What destroyer1212 said, however he'd require a way to Soulbond the Silverblade Paladin to Spark Trooper if it was Soulbonded to Firemane Avenger in the first place.

Sorry, disregard what I said. I read it as if he Cloudshift ed the Firemane Avenger .

Destroyer and Kirtanei are correct. Battalion triggers at the end of the declare attackers step; once he's attacked with three creatures the trigger is going on the stack, regardless of what happens to the creatures after that. And as long as the paladin is Cloudshift ed before combat damage, the newly double striking Spark Trooper will deal two instances of six damage.

Wait the soul bonded effect of double strike granted by the paLadin only remains because he blinked and rebonded to the trooper. If he had responded to the cloud shift with a 2nd searing spears then the double strike would gone at the time damage was dealt. I just want to be sure I have this right.

Yes, that's true. If a second Searing Spear was cast in response to the Cloudshift , then the second Spear would resolve before the Shift and the Paladin would die. Then the Shift would be countered by the game for having no target when it tried to resolve, and then the first Spear would do the same as it tried to resolve.
