Reflecting damage and Phyrexian Unlife

Asked by um_fido 2 years ago

Hi friends,

What happens when I Reflect Damage with Phyrexian Unlife on the battlefield? Will it redirect infect damage or normal damage?

Thanks!

Phyrexian Unlife only affects damage that would be dealt “to you”.

This sort of thing is often tough to figure out with old cards, as they usually have... outdated rules text (the word "redirect" doesn't mean anything in today's Magic!) but the updated Reflect Damage is worded as follows:

The next time a source of your choice would deal damage this turn, that damage is dealt to that source’s controller instead.

What this means is the damage is never actually dealt to you: the event is replaced entirely with Reflect's new, well, reflection. You can spot this sort of effect by its use of the word "instead"--although again, that's only in the errata'd card.

So thus, the damage will be dealt in its regular form, since Phrexian Unlife never sees the damage at all.

RyuSama420 in the future, please try to be a little more clear when answering in the Rules Q&A, as the goal is to get people to understand the rules as a whole more clearly. Thanks!

Omniscience_is_life: i was. no offense, but you didn't actually "add" anything more than what i said. you just used more words to say it. i personally think less words makes the point clearer.
