Rancor/oblivion ring in pauper

Asked by kram130 12 years ago

Okay so I have a pauper weekender coming up and i like the look of both Rancor and Oblivion Ring - I want to use them, and i have the common versions of them, however, they have recently been upgraded in rarity to Uncommon. Does this make them illegal to use in a pauper deck? I think yes. but i might (hopefully) be wrong.

According to Wizards of the Coast, as long as the common version was printed on Magic Online, you may use it in a pauper deck. Rancor and Oblivion Ring were both printed as commons in Magic Online, so you're good to go.

Sorry, I should make this clearer, as long as it was ever printed as a common on Magic online, any version may be used for a pauper tournament.

Double check this, if it's a sanctionnent tournement you will want to be sure. If it's with friend, my playgroup use the latest gatherer rating for rarity of cards, making rancor and oblivion ring uncommon.

@Bobgalarneau: The official rules for Pauper only care if the card was ever printed as a common, not if it currently is a common.

i totaly agree with the official ruling Epochalyptik, but since there is a reason why those cards have been upgraded in rarity, usualy because they are more powerfull than commons, gentlemen agreements in casual groups can use the most recent gatherer rating. this is why he should double check. his question doesn't say it is for a official tournements (not sure if there is sanctionned pauper tournements anyway) so there may be "houserules"
