Here's the ruling, basically verifying what NDRue said...
If the target of Rancor when it's cast as a spell is an illegal target when Rancor tries to resolve, Rancor will be countered and put into its owner's graveyard. It won't return to its owner's hand.
Given that the creature was killed in response, there would be no legal target for Rancor and it would be placed in its owner's graveyard.

@Behgz I have no idea where Cloudshift fits in. I don't want to counter my own Rancor , and I can't do it to an opponents....

Rancor 's target declared during casting was removed, therefore it goes straight to the graveyard, as it did not enter the battlefield at all.
