Rancor coming back from being O-Ringed
Asked by meecht 12 years ago
If my opponent uses Oblivion Ring on my Rancor , then I play O-Ring on their O-Ring, will my Rancor return to my hand or go to the graveyard?
My guess is that it will go to the graveyard because 1.) an aura's target is selected when it's cast instead of when it ETB's, and 2.) Rancor isn't technically "in play" when it returns from exile.

When the O-ring on the Rancor leaves, Rancor tries to go back to the battlefield. If there's at least one legal creature it can enchant, you have to put it on one of those creatures, even if it's not yours. If there's nothing it can legally enchant, it stays in the zone it was in, which in this case is exile.
303.4f If an Aura is entering the battlefield under a players control by any means other than by resolving as an Aura spell, and the effect putting it onto the battlefield doesnt specify the object or player the Aura will enchant, that player chooses what it will enchant as the Aura enters the battlefield. The player must choose a legal object or player according to the Auras enchant ability and any other applicable effects.
303.4g If an Aura is entering the battlefield and there is no legal object or player for it to enchant, the Aura remains in its current zone, unless that zone is the stack. In that case, the Aura is put into its owners graveyard instead of entering the battlefield.

You will get to choose an appropriate creature to attach it to.
