Rage forger interaction with Shaman of the Great Hunt

Asked by ojmandias 8 years ago

When Rage Forger comes into the battlefield, and I have a Shaman of the Great Hunt on the field already. If I attack with my Shaman, the 1 damage it deals to my opponent via Rage Forger. Does that count as combat damage because it happens during combat, and does it trigger Shaman's ability to get a +1/+1 counter?

Combat damage is only any damage that is assigned and dealt as a turn-based action during the beginning of the combat damage step as a result of creatures attacking or blocking.

Damage from spells and abilities is never combat damage. Abilities that trigger on combat damage look for damage meeting the above qualifications.

I'm going to reorder this for simplicity and detail what happens -

You presently have a Shaman of the Great Hunt in play

You then, before your declare attackers step, put a Rage Forger into play, triggering it to put a +1/+1 counter onto Shaman of the Great Hunt

You then proceed to declare attackers step and announce Shaman of the Great Hunt, triggering Rage Forger's second ability

Now moving to the damage step assuming no blockers have been announced or spells cast, Shaman of the Great Hunt would hit your opponent for 5 damage and set off it's own trigger, adding a single +1/+1 counter onto itself

that is all that would happen

Thanks, that's what I thought. But it never came up in play before.
