Radiate able targets

Asked by Rulestiggler 9 years ago

Can you radiate a spell that says target opponent. Or one that says you and target opponent/player. Finally spells that say choose an option and one of them has a radiate able choice. Do the copies have same choice or i choose for each copy.

radiate copies a spell of each other viable target.

If you copy a spell that only has one viable target, then radiate will not make any copies. But will still resolve as it only targets the spell.

Copies of spells have the same choices as the original unless the ability that creates the copy states otherwise. In other words, you can not change the choices originally made. THe copies will use the same mode as the original spell.

As long as the spell has just one target (the specifics of the card's rules text will let you know how many targets it has) then Radiate can target it. How many copies Radiate makes depends on how many other objects the original spell could have legally targeted. If you're playing a one-on-one game and cast Lava Spike on your opponent then Radiate will just make one more copy, pointed at you. If instead you Radiate a Lightning Bolt then there will be copies for you, each of your opponent's creatures, and each of your creatures. If you Radiate Rakdos's Return then Radiate won't make any copies, because you don't have any other opponents.

Copying a spell also copies all choices made while casting the spell, including modes or targets. All spell-copying effects have some extra element that either defines new targets for the copies or allows you to reselect the targets, but no effects currently exist that will allow you to reselect modes.

If the spell says target opponent, it would put a copy on the stack that targets each opponent. If it says player, it would target all players. If it would target a creature, every creature would be targeted. And, as far as choices, putting a spell on the stack would allow you to make the decision when it resolves, so you would be able to make a decision for each one of them, but it would only be able to have one target in all of the choices in order to be radiated.

Note that Radiate creates one copy for each potential target, not one copy overall that targets every potential target. Lightning Bolt, for example, can only target one thing; you can't create a copy of Lightning Bolt that targets every creature and player simultaneously.
