Question about Sphere of Safety

Asked by OneWinged 7 years ago

In a Two-Headed Giant game where my teammate controls a Sphere of Safety, can my opponents attack me instead to avoid paying the triggered ability?

Thanks in advance!

Yes. I usually like to give a more in depth answer but this one is pretty simple.

No, they can't attack you without paying the cost.

Official ruling from Gatherer: "In a Two-Headed Giant game, if one player controls Sphere of Safety, creatures cant attack that players team or a planeswalker that player controls unless their controller pays X for each of those creatures he or she controls. Creatures can attack planeswalkers controlled by that players teammate without having to pay this cost."

Relevant rules quote:

810.7c. As the declare attackers step begins, the active team declares attackers. If an effect of an object controlled by a defending player prohibits a creature from attacking him or her, that creature cant attack the defending team. The active team has one combined attack, and that set of attacking creatures must be legal as a whole. See rule 508.1.
