question about Scavenging Ooze

Asked by abenz419 11 years ago

What happens if my opponent cast Hero's Downfall in response to me activating Scavenging Ooze ability?

I know the Ooze will die, and then the ability will be on the stack still. It will resolve (assuming the creature card I targeted was still in the graveyard) and the card will get exiled. There is no card to receive the +1/+1 counter anymore, so do I still gain one life? or is the life dependent on the counter being added?

If a resolving effect gives an impossible instruction, you just skip the impossible part and do whatever else you can. There isn't any text like "if you do", etc. linking the counter and life, so they aren't dependent on one another. You gain life.

  • The ability will go on the stack

  • opponent casts Hero's Downfall and it goes on the stack

  • your creature dies

  • the ability resolves, you gain the life and the token falls away

ok thanks. Its just the way it's worded, "if it was a creature, then add a counter and gain a life". it makes it seem like it's a package deal, either you get both or you get nothing.
