Question about Hardened Scales
Asked by sup3rskrull 10 years ago
Hardened Scales Does this card double the counters on my creature that it would get this turn? Say I cast an instant or sorcery and I target my creature gain +4/+4 counters, if I have Hardened Scales would my creatures get +9/+9?

No. Hardened Scales increases the number of counters that would be placed on a creature by 1, so if you used Ajani Steadfast to put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control, you would get 2 +1/+1 counters instead. If you used Ajani, Mentor of Heroes to put 3 +1/+1 counters on target creature, that creature would get 4 counters instead.

Note too that if your creature gained a +4/+4 counter, Hardened Scales would have no effect at all - it only effects the placement of +1/+1 counters.
(Yes, there currently aren't such things as +4/+4 counters, but Magic does use non 1 counters - the most common (IIRC) is a +1/+2 counter, which Hardened Scales also wouldn't effect)

No, it just adds one. It's a replacement effect that replaces the event of adding X +1/+1 counters and instead adds X+1.
