Question about bloodthirst.
Asked by Syinide 13 years ago
How does bloodthirst work? How do you activate the ability? Can it only be activated once? Say you activate the ability, someone returns it to your hand, do the counters stay on the creature with it and can you activate it again and add more counters? Thanks in advance.
And no if someone returns the card to your hand the counters do not stay on it but you may activate its bloodthirst a second time to put them back on.
Almost always necessary to cast the creature on your second mainphase unless you have a spell such as Shock or Taste of Blood to activate it first mainphase.

Ok, does the amount of damage done to the opponent matter, or does that not effect the amount of counters that go onto the creature?

First, bloodthirst is not an activated ability. It is a static ability. The complete Comprehensive rulebook entry on bloodthirst:
702.52a Bloodthirst is a static ability. "Bloodthirst N" means "If an opponent was dealt damage this turn, this permanent enters the battlefield with N +1/+1 counters on it."
702.52b "Bloodthirst X" is a special form of bloodthirst. "Bloodthirst X" means This permanent enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it, where X is the total damage your opponents have been dealt this turn."
702.52c If an object has multiple instances of bloodthirst, each applies separately.
Whenever a permanent leaves the battlefield, then that card returns to the battlefield at a later time for any reason, it does not retain any memory of its prior existences as a permanent. It will have no counters carried over from before.
Bloodthirst requires that an opponent was dealt damage earlier in the same turn that the permanent with bloodthirst would enter the battlefield. If that condition is met, that permanent enters the battlefield with X or N +1/+1 counter(s). If not, it enters normally. Note that life loss and damage are not the same. Bloodthirst specifically requires damage.
Bloodthirst does not apply multiple times if an opponent was dealt damage multiple times in the turn. The only time the amount of damage dealt is relevant is in the case of "Bloodthirst X".

Well alright, just one up me then, and i didn't mean to say that it was an activated ability, just that it was caused/activated/started by the opponent being dealt damage.
Also out of curiosity what creature has bloodthirst x?

Bloodthirst is an ability on creatures only that is activated by a player being dealt damage before the creature is played. When a player is dealt damage and you play a creature with bloodthirst such as Blood Ogre the creature enters the battlefield with the amount of +1/+1 counters on it equal to its blood thirst, in this case 1. only works once per cast.
