Prototype Portal + Darksteel Citadel?

Asked by partick 10 years ago

Let's say I play a Prototype Portal . Can I exile Darksteel Citadel and get an extra land off of it each turn? Or does that break the "one land per turn" rule?

You would be able to do it. The land plays rule only counts land that is actually played. Prototype portal simply puts tokens into play.

It would break it. Unless something else allows you to play more than one land per turn. The new rules specifically address issues like this. Though this would have always broken it.

Playing a land for the turn is a special action. When you put a land onto the battlefield during the resolution of a spell or ability, that land was not played as a special action. Therefore, Prototype Portal doesn't interfere with your normal land drop.

@Devonin: I clarified a bit because it's not exactly clear what you mean. You used play in two different senses, and it's important in this case to make the distinction between playing a land as a special action and putting a land onto the battlefield (into play) as a resolution of something.

@gufymike: The ability wouldn't break anything. The new rules only apply to effects that allow you to play additional lands per turn as a special action. They don't currently, nor will they after M14 interact with lands put onto the battlefield during the resolution of an ability.
