Protection From Creatures

Asked by Minnuet 10 years ago

Opponent has Blizzard Specter (Flying Snow creature 2/3 - "Whenever Blizzard Specter deals combat damage to a player, choose one- That player returns a permanent he or she controls to its owner's hand: or that player discards a card.") on the field,

I have a creature with an attached Spirit Mantle enchantment ( Aura- Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has protection from creatures.)

He attacks with Blizzard Specter and since my creature does not have flying/reach I accept the combat damage, He then tells me to return my creature on the field (with the attached Spirit Mantel enchanment) to my hand as a part of Blizzard Specter's ability.

Is this correct? Since my creature has protection from creatures, is he able to firstly; chose my creature?and secondly; if he's able to chose my creature does the ability resolve or does it get negated from my protection?

His intent is to return that creature to my hand so that the enchantment falls off.

That player returns a permanent he or she controls to its owner's hand: or that player discards a card.") on the field,

He can choose for you to return a permanent you control to your hand, as his ability doesn't target. That said, he doesn't get to choose what you return so you could just return a land or the enchantment, leaving the creature on the field.

Thank you, He said he read it wrong.

Could I chose my creature with protection and the effect be nullified because it has protection from creatures and it is a creatures ability causing it to be removed?

Protection four things.

Can't be damaged by x sources

Can't be enchant/equipped by x sources

Can't be blocked by x sources

And can't be targeted by x sources

This ability does none of these things. If you choose your creature, it will be returned to your hand and the enchantment lost.

If it did require an actual target, you would not be allowed to choose an illegal target like your pro creature creature

Okay, and just to clarify, if his creature had trample, my creature with protection would not die from his creature because its protected from the damage, but the damage would still go through to me?

Yes. He would assign what would normally be lethal (if your creature was blocking), so equal to your creature's toughness. Anything in excess of that value can trample over
