Protection and Trample

Asked by bcurran 14 years ago

This came up in a tournament I had with a group of friends. If I attack with, for example, a Primeval Titan , and my opponent blocks it with something that has protection from Green, say, a Mirran Crusader , does Trample still apply? In other words, does 6-2=4 damage go through to the defending player, or does no damage go through at all, because the Titan cannot deal any damage to the Crusader?

To start you assign damage before taking prevention into account.

So trample says you must assign lethal damage before you are able to assign damage to the player.

You assign 2 damage to the crusader and 4 to the player.

The damage is to the crusader prevented by the green protection and the player is hit for 4.

drookdane is correct. Damage assignment doesn't take into account any effects that would change the amount of damage that would actually be dealt.
