Priority Question, ex. Black Cat

Asked by Bauhom 12 years ago

Black Cat dies in combat. Can the active player (or non-active) respond by casting an instant spell before Black Cat forces the active player to discard? I think the answer is that you can respond to the trigger on the Black Cat, but I'm not sure.

When an object (like a triggered ability) is added to the stack, its controller gets priority. It doesn't start resolving until everyone passes priority while it's still on top of the stack. Instead of passing, a player can make a response.

Yes, if the opponent of Black Cat 's owner/controller has enough mana, they can cast any spells they want to use before the discard trigger resolves.

For instance, my opponent has Black Cat and it dies. Its trigger goes on the stack, which will force me to discard. I'll still get priority before the trigger resolves, so if I have only one card in my hand and am able to cast it (enough mana, right timing, appropriate targets if any, etc.), I can do that in order to keep from having to discard it.

Nitpick: The active player gets priority, not the player whose ability was added to the stack when something resolves.

When a player (NAP or AP) casts a spell, activates an ability, or performs a special action they receive priority again. Triggered abilities do not grant priority.

Triggered abilities do not grant priority to their controller*.

You do still get the chance to respond before they resolve, as Rhad said.

The active player gets priority first, yes, but regardless, everyone will get a chance to respond before Black Cat 's trigger actually resolves.

@GoblinsInc: You're right. I was misremembering and misinterpreting one of the priority rules. Good catch.
