Power/Toughness versus Counters

Asked by Fleetfiend 12 years ago

I asked a similar question to this involving how Gigantomancer would interact with +1/+1 counters, but now I'm wondering how counters affect Evolve.

If I put Nimbus Swimmer on the field with 3 counters on him, would he still trigger the evolve ability of, say, Elusive Krasis ?

Similarly, would Prime Speaker Zegana (after the Swimmer is on the field, ignoring the Krasis for question's sake) enter as only a 1/1 with no counters on her, or would she get 3 counters because of Swimmer?

"Power" doesn't mean "printed power", it means whatever the power happens to be right now. Nimbus Swimmer with 3 counters is a 3/3, so he'll evolve Elusive Krasis . Likewise, that 3/3 Swimmer will have Prime Speaker Zegana enter the battlefield with 3 counters.

If the creature has a wording "This creature Enters the battlefield with (some number) of +1/+1 on it.", then it enters as with a power and toughness equal to it's written P/T plus the total counters. - Nimbus Swimmer, cast with an X of 3, would enter the battlefiels as a 3/3 (0/0 plus 3x +1/+1 counters). - This would trigger Evolve on any creatures with power or toughness less than 3.

Prime Speaker Zegana , would see the counters on all creatures. If Nimbus Swimmer, with it's 3x +1/+1 counters is the creature with greatest power you control, the speaker would come into play with 3 +1/+1 counters. - It would enter the battlefield as a 4/4, you would draw 4 cards, and Evolve creatures with power of toughness less than 4 would trigger their evolve.

That's a much better explanation of everything going on here.
