Portcullis + Phasing
Asked by doinitwrong 13 years ago
If I cast an artifact creature, like Ornithopter , when there's a Portcullis and 2 other creatures on the field, then use Vision Charm to phase out the creature in response to Portcullis 's ability triggering, what will happen?

I found this on the gathering rulings for Portcullis .
10/4/2004: Creatures which are phasing in will not trigger this card's ability.

The Portcullis trigger goes on the stack to exile the Ornithopter and the Vision Charm would go on the stack on top. It would resolve first, phasing out the thopter. Then the portcullis trigger would resolve, but nothing would happen to the thopter because it is phased out and cannot be interacted with. Then at your next upkeep it would phase in, and since phasing does not cause a creature to change zones, it would not be entering the battlefield, so portcullis would not trigger. You just cheated out an artifact creature through the portcullis, good job!
