Player responsibility

Asked by darthjosur 8 years ago

HI, I'm a casual player who has only done pre-releases for judged events, but I have a small playgroup and we ran into a question on what player responsibilities are.

Basically, one guy had a Jace, Architect of Thought in play and then flipped his Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip into the planeswalker half without saccing one of them. Play continued for about 5 turns past this, then the opponent realized that there were two Jace planeswalkers in play. We ended up just having them re-play the game, but can anyone tell me what would have happened at a tournament? Are both player's responsible for knowing about the legendary/planeswalker rule or was one player "cheating?" Thanks!

Nevermind guys, I was just able to find the Infraction Procedure Guide (https://www.wizards.com/ContentResources/Wizards/WPN/Main/Documents/Magic_The_Gathering_Infraction_Procedure_Guide_PDF2.pdf) and it answered my question. Sorry to bother you all.

It depends on the tournament.

Events in Magic are judged according to their Rules Enforcement Level, or REL.

Friday Night Magic events are judged at "Regular REL," which is a comparatively forgiving level and emphasizes player learning and growth through leniency and forgiveness. Punishments are neither as numerous nor as severe in Regular REL as in the others.

The other two RELs, Competitive and Professional, are, for your purposes as a mostly casual player, nearly identical. Both are stricter about the rules and punishments than Regular REL.

The Infraction Procedure Guide applies only at Competitive and Professional REL. At the FNM level, the Judging at Regular REL document takes precedence.
