Planeswalkers as opponents

Asked by Fleetfiend 12 years ago

After some googling on the topic, I'm still a bit confused.

What I THINK I've gathered is that when an opponent controls a planeswalker and damage is dealt to target opponent (from, for example, Deathrite Shaman ), the damage can be redirected to the planeswalker.

Am I on the right track? And if so, Is it the controller of the planeswalker that designates this damage redirection, or is it the aggressor?

Losing life is not synonymous with damage, so Deathrite Shaman 's ability doesn't count.

If a source you control would deal noncombat damage to an opponent, you may redirect that damage to a planeswalker that player controls instead.

Planeswalkers are NOT players, nor are they opponents.

Just as a point, Guttersnipe s ability deals damage, which CAN be redirected towards Planeswalkers, where, as Epochalyptik pointed out, Deathrite Shaman cannot be redirected.
