Planeswalkers Are Players?

Asked by onthestack 12 years ago

Are planeswalkers players? For example, if a Falkenrath Marauders attacks and deals damage to Gideon Jura , will the Falkenrath Marauders get the two +1/+1 counters? I know I've asked this question before. This time, I need an official ruling. Assistance is appreciated!

Planeswalkers are not players. They're considered their own kind of permanent, "planeswalkers" and that's it. Unless a card specifically says "planeswalker" in it, it doesn't interact with it directly. The Marauders would not get counters on them, because they are damaging a planeswalker, not a player.

A player is a human entity in the game. Planeswalkers are not players, they're cardboard, as is evidenced by their typeline. This is a common misconception that usually arises when people say this to newer players for lack of a formal description of planeswalker mechanics.

The only similarity between planeswalkers and players is that they can both be attacked during combat.

From the CR glossary:

PlayerOne of the people in the game. See rule 102, Players.

You can also redirect non-combat damage from an opponent to a planeswalker he controls, which confuses some new players too.

The reason planewalkers are often mistaken for players is because they also use something like life points (loyalty counters) , and can more or less by targeted by spells that target players aswell (such as Shock for example, though u actualy target the player, and than chose to put the damege on the planewalker instead)
