Phyrexian Unlife/Angel's Grace
Asked by imaproroessler 10 years ago
If I had Phyrexian Unlife on the board and were about to be dealt my final poison counters but then played Angel's Grace, would I then have 1 life in addition to my remaining poison counters or would I still take the damage in the form of poison counters?
Sorry I couldn't figure out how to link the cards

First of all, let's address the question concerning whether your life total goes up to 1: No, it doesn't. If you look at Angel's Grace
at the gatherer, there is a specific ruling that addresses this: 25.9.2006: If your life total goes below 1, being dealt damage will not increase it back up to 1.
For the question about the poison counters, there is another relevant ruling: 25.9.2006: Angel's Grace doesn't prevent damage. It only changes the result of damage dealt to you. For example, a creature with lifelink that deals damage to you will still cause its controller to gain life, even if that damage would reduce your life total to less than 1.
This means, that you are still getting your poison counters for the damage dealt. You can't of course lose this turn, because of Angel's Grace
, but you will lose as soon as the next turn begins.

Absinthman Technically you lose the game on next turns upkeep, not at beginning of the turn since losing is a state based action and those are not checked at untap.

Technically yes, but functionally it makes no difference as nobody gets a chance to do anything that could revert the outcome before you lose.
