Phasing

Asked by LiquidKid 11 years ago

I have Eater of Days on the field and he gets targeted with Murder ...I use Vision Charm to phase him out...When he comes back in, I can attack with him right? Also, how does phasing(in general) work? An example would be Taniwha or Teferi's Isle ...thanks for your help, LK

Phasing works the following way. At the beginning of your untap step, all permanents with phasing phase out and simultaneously all permanents that phased out under your control phase in. Also if a permanent that phases out is enchanted with auras or equipped with something, those auras/equipment phase out with it. When permanents phase out or in, they do not in fact leave or enter the battlefield - so they don't change any zones. Phased out permanents are still on the battlefield but are treated as though they werent there in all respects. That's why creatures which phase in can attack that turn and don't suffer from summoning sickness and why counters remain on permanents that phase out, and so on.

Yes, you can attack with it, as it doesn't leave the battlefield.

For how Phasing works, read this.

At the very beginning of your untap step, before you even untap anything, you simultaneously phase out all permanents with phasing and phase in anything that happened to be phased out. This doesn't cause anything to change zones ("phased in/out" is a status, like "tapped/untapped"), and no zone-change effects will be applied.

Even though the game couldn't see those permanents when they were phased out, rules and effects that care about the history of those permanents won't count the phased out period as you losing control of the permanents or the permanents leaving the battlefield. This means any creatures that phased in will be able to attack and activate abilities with the Tap symbol in the cost.

Yes, you can attack with it. if you could otherwise have attacked with him.

702.25d The phasing event doesnt actually cause a permanent to change zones or control, even though its treated as not othough its n the battlefield and not under its controllers control while its phased out. Zone-change triggers dont trigger when a permanent phases in or out. Counters remain on a permanent while its phased out. Effects that check a phased-in permanents history wont treat the phasing event as having caused the permanent to leave or enter the battlefield or its controllers control.

If you want more info on phasing, read section 702.25 of the comprehensive rules. It's fairly long so I won't post it all here,

702.25. Phasing

It's a stupid ability...phasing out creatures or artifacts in response to something is cool though.
