Parallel Lives Stacking

Asked by Frostbite 13 years ago

Lets say I have two Parallel Lives out on the field, then play a Midnight Haunting or something similar. Would I get 6 tokens or would I get 8 as if one parallel lives doubled the original, then the second doubled that?

i think it doubles every time mate so using your example, playing a Midnight Haunting with 2 Parallel Lives in play would yield 8 rather than 2 total because the Parallel Lives trigger one after another so one trigers giving you 4 instead of 2 then the second triggers giving you 8 instead of 4, etc etc. hope this heps

The ability on Parallel Lives is a replacement effect (the word "instead" is the signal for it here). When more than one replacement effect could apply to a single event, then the affected player or controller of the affected object decides what order to apply them in. If, after you apply the first effect, the next one can still be applied, then you do so, and so on down the line in order.

So in your example, both Lives want to replace Midnight Haunting 's token making with "twice that many...instead". You apply one Lives replacement effect first, so now you're at 4 tokens. The other Lives replacement effect can still be applied to the event (because it's still making tokens), so you do that, and now you're at 8. That's pretty good for just 3 mana!

I have to disagree. the card says "If an effect would put one or more tokens onto the battlefield under your control, it puts twice that many tokens onto the battlefield instead." so the effect is already imprinted on your battlefield when the card enters, so therefore putting out another card that that gives you the same effect does not change the effect already in motion. i hope i explained that good enough, if there is any problems, or confusions contact me

for example ill just use the Midnight Haunting as the effect, now when there is one Parallel Lives out the effect gives you 4 instead, if there is two it does not change because the one effect triggers the 2 same ability's at the same time and sense the ability gives you double you just get the 4, not the 8. now im not trying to be a joy kill i have a token deck myself. obviously this concept does not apply to all enchantments like Parallel Lives due to different wording and such

Replacement effects don't work that way. I don't mean to sound like a jackass, but if you're going to dredge up a months-old topic to offer a "correction", you need to do be certain you're actually correct. The following is from the Comprehensive Rulebook, and is the basis for my earlier response (the parts most important to this question are in bold):

616: Interaction of Replacement and/or Prevention Effects

616.1. If two or more replacement and/or prevention effects are attempting to modify the way an event affects an object or player, the affected object's controller (or its owner if it has no controller) or the affected player chooses one to apply, following the steps listed below. If two or more players have to make these choices at the same time, choices are made in APNAP order (see rule 101.4).

616.1a If any of the replacement and/or prevention effects are self-replacement effects (see rule 614.15), one of them must be chosen. If not, proceed to rule 616.1b.

616.1b If any of the replacement and/or prevention effects would modify under whose control an object would enter the battlefield, one of them must be chosen. If not, proceed to rule 616.1c.

616.1c If any of the replacement and/or prevention effects would cause an object to become a copy of another object as it enters the battlefield, one of them must be chosen. If not, proceed to rule 616.1d.

616.1d Any of the applicable replacement and/or prevention effects may be chosen.

616.1e Once the chosen effect has been applied, this process is repeated (taking into account only replacement or prevention effects that would now be applicable) until there are no more left to apply.

616.2. A replacement or prevention effect can become applicable to an event as the result of another replacement or prevention effect that modifies the event.
