Overrun vs. Blood Artist
Asked by IAmKingTony 13 years ago
Here's the scenario. I just played an Overrun that would deal lethal trample damage. However my opponent has a pair of Blood Artist s out and I'm down to 5 life. He has plenty of little creatures to block out and trigger them to kill me.
However I'm assuming my trample damage ends the game before the Artist's triggers go off. Friend thinks I'm right too but I figured I would check.
Trampley death, or a portrait of disaster?
To expound more upon what Rhadamanthus is saying... When damage is dealt from the combat step, priority would pass between players, thus checking SBA's, and ending the game before the Blood Artist 's triggers even have a chance to go on the stack.

Yes you would win. When the state based actions are checked after combat damage is dealt he would have zero life ending the game at the same time the creatures died. The artists ability would trigger after this check.

Clarification from the comp rules (in support of Rhadamanthus):
510.2 Second, all combat damage that's been assigned is dealt simultaneously. This turn-based action doesn't use the stack. No player has the chance to cast spells or activate abilities between the time combat damage is assigned and the time it's dealt. This is a change from previous rules.
510.3 Third, any abilities that triggered on damage being assigned or dealt go on the stack.
510.4 Fourth, the active player gets priority. Players may cast spells and activate abilities.
704.1 State-based actions are game actions that happen automatically whenever certain conditions (listed below) are met. State-based actions don't use the stack.
704.3 Whenever a player would get priority, the game checks for any of the listed condition for state-based actions, then performs all applicable state-based actions simultaneously as a single event.

based on the rulings djgunn has posted it seems to me like the artists ability and would give/take life simultaneously with the SBA check or am i reading that wrong?

No, a triggered ability doesn't resolve immediately after it triggers. It has to get put on the stack first and give people a chance to respond. However, the player is already dead by the time that would happen.
The situation would be different if we were talking about the interaction with a static ability like lifelink, where the life gain is applied at the same time the damage is. In that case, if the gain from lifelink was enough to leave the player at positive life after counting the Overrun damage, he would still be alive.

Player death for 0 or less life is a state based action, and SBAs are checked and executed right before each time a player would receive priority. Your opponent dies at the same time the creatures are destroyed by lethal damage (creature destruction for lethal damage is also an SBA).
