Ordeal of Nylea interaction with pre-existing counters?
Asked by woll3Y 11 years ago
Ordeal of Nylea gives a 1/1 counter each time the enchanted creature attacks. Once the creature has 3 1/1 counters on it, Ordeal of Nylea is sacrificed and 2 basic land cards are brought into play tapped. I have two questions regarding this.
1) Does this number of 3 counters include counters not applied by Ordeal of Nylea ?
2) If the number of counters does include other sources of counters (such as monstrous) does Ordeal of Nylea immediately resolve if the creature has 3 counters already? (I'm thinking specifically of playing Ordeal of Nylea on a monstrous Arbor Colossus .)

1) Yes. Ordeal of Nylea cares about ANY +1/+1 counters on enchanted creature, not just ones it gives.
2) Ordeal of Nylea will only sac itself when the enchanted creature attacks AND it has 3 or more +1/+1 counters on it (after the ordeal places the counter). The ability that causes it do sac is part of the ability that triggers on attacking.
Please note that this is true of all 5 of the ordeals.

Ordeal of Nylea will be sacrificed and have its effect after the creature attacks and if it has 3 counters on it - it doesn't matter where those counters came from.
If your Colossus is already monstrous with 3 counters and you enchant it with the Ordeal, Ordeal will be sacrificed as soon as the Colossus attacks (and gets his fourth +1/+1 counter.)
