Omnath locus of mana question

Asked by Dieorlive 8 years ago

okay, so lets say i have an Omnath, locust of mana and have 5 green mana in my mana pool (so he is a 6/6) and my apponent plays a card that will give omnath negetive counters 6 of them since omnath depends on my mana for its power and toughness wouldnt he not be affected by it because he would be constantly going up from the 5 mana in my green mana pool?

Consider Omnath, Locus of Mana's +1/+1 ability to be similar to an anthem. It is a persistent effect as long as Omnath remains on the field. Even though anthem-like effects are different than placing counters, they still interact with each other.

Your Omnath will still die once the 6 -1/-1 counters are placed on it because it will be a 0/0. The anthem and negative counters counteract each other even though neither effect is removed; this is similar to as if we were talking about positive and negative counters, which cancel each other 1:1 and cause counters to be removed.

Hi, welcome to TappedOut! If you have rules related questions in the future, please ask them in the Rules Q&A linked in the top header.

Both Omnath's ability and the -1/-1 counters are Continuous Effects that change Omnath's power and toughness. Rule 613 (in your case 613.3) regulates the interactions of these effects. Here is a link to that rule, as it is quite complex and has links to other relevant rules.

Basically, what happens is this: If multiple continuous effects that change power/toughness apply to a creature, they are applied in different layers, and within the layers the latest one takes precedence.

The relevant layers in your case are 7c and 7d.

613.3c Layer 7c: Effects that modify power and/or toughness (but dont set power and/or toughness to a specific number or value) are applied.

613.3d Layer 7d: Power and/or toughness changes from counters are applied. See rule 121, "Counters."

Omnath's ability is a buff that is applied in layer 7c, exactly like the anthems (eg Glorious Anthem) GearNoir mentioned. After that, the -1/-1 counters are applied in layer 7d.

Omnath will be a 6/6 with 6 -1/-1 counters. Its toughness will be 0, so it will die.

You could prevent this if you could produce an additional . Then Omnath would be a 7/7 creature with 6 counters on it, so its toughness would be 1. Then all you'd have to do is to be careful to always have at least 7 in your mana pool, so it doesn't die.
