Nekusar, the Mindrazer, when and how doe she deal his damage?

Asked by Zacoly 11 years ago

"At the beginning of each player's draw step, that player draws an additional card.

Whenever an opponent draws a card, Nekusar, the Mindrazer deals 1 damage to that player."

Does he deal 1 damage directly after each card is drawn or a total of 2 damage after both cards are drawn?

In other words, do all draw all the cards, then take a single total of damage or does he respond to each card drawn separately and deal several individual 1 damage strikes?

Nekusar will trigger once for each card drawn. Card draws are unique in magic in that the rules cut them into discrete units, as opposed to scry 2, for example, only counting once for Flamespeaker Adept . If you draw two cards, Nekusar will deal 2 damage to you (assuming nothing else is affecting the situation).

In the case you describe, either the player whose turn it is will draw a card, take 1 damage, then draw another card, then take another 1 damage OR he will draw two cards, then take 2 damage. Which happens is the choice of Nekusar's controller, as it depends on how you stack the triggers.

Actually, you can't stack the triggers any way you want.

The moment you enter your Draw step, the first ability of Nekusar, the Mindrazer goes on the stack. You would draw your card for turn, which places Nekusar's second ability on top of his first ability, then the stack resolves.

You would draw for turn, take 1 damage, draw the extra card, take 1 damage.

My basis for this is the reminder text on Teferi's Puzzle Box . It triggers in your draw step, but the 8th edition printing specifically states "That player draws his or her card for turn first."

  1. Draw Step

504.1. First, the active player draws a card. This turn-based action doesnt use the stack.

504.2. Second, any abilities that trigger at the beginning of the draw step and any other abilities that have triggered go on the stack.

As I understand the rules, you can stack them either way.

You are correct. I should really be more well-versed in the rules of my favorite general.
