Necroskitter interaction with Black Sun's Zenith
Asked by Minathia 13 years ago
Two part question here:
Question 1: If i have a Necroskitter in play, and I cast a Black Sun's Zenith for 4 or more, wiping the board. Does Necroskitter 's may return ability trigger?
My Thought: No. Necroskitter needs to remain in play for the trigger to work. So if X equaled 3 or less on the Black Sun's Zenith , it would... or would it?
Second Question: Or would it? Do the dead creatures have enough time to recognize that the 3 -1/-1 counters that killed them were -1/-1 counters?
My Thought: When a creature dies with Necroskitter on the field, a quick check for -1/-1 counters is made. If it has atleast one, it will trigger the may ability of Necroskitter . That check will look at the last moment the creature was in play for this check. At that last moment, this creature is a x/3 creature with 3 -1/-1 counters (net x-3/0 creature), so it should trigger.
Just need a quick gut check on this logic.

Also, the game knows that those creatures had -1/-1 counters on them (that is how they died, after all). There won't be a situation in which the game forgets that those counters exist.

If anyone is disturbed by the thought that THE GAME KNOWS, there's another perfectly boring and mechanical explanation for it. The class of triggered abilities known as "leaves the battlefield" triggered abilities trigger from the battlefield, and use information from the game state at the time right before the "leave the battlefield" event occurred to determine whether or not they trigger and what the result is. Since the Black-Sunned creatures had -1/-1 counters on them right before they died, and because Necroskitter was still on the battlefield at that time, his ability existed at the time it would have been triggered by the triggering events.
It doesn't even sound like a word anymore. Triggertriggertrigger.

Necroskitter
does not need to be in play. If it and any other creatures die simultaneously, its ability will trigger for each of the other relevant creatures.
Creatures "see each other" leaving play if they leave at the same time. This is similar to how they see each other enter if they enter at the same time. Abilities on each of them will trigger.
