Myr Welder + Transmogrifying Licid + Demonspine Whip = ???

Asked by rwillians 12 years ago

For example, I have a Myr Welder, and I exiled with it a Demonspine Whip and a Transmogrifying Licid.

After, I use the Transmogrifying Licid ability, becoming the Myr an enchantment.I attached it to a creature.

Then, can I use the equip ability from the Myr Welder? And using the Demonspine Whip first ability, will it affect the enchanted creature?

wait...did you exile BOTH the whip and the licid?

I think I'm misunderstand that key element...because if the licid is already imprinted on the Myr...that makes it....um. different.

because you can't attach anything to itself...

I exiled the licid and the demonspine whip. After, using the licid ability, I attached the Myr to another creature.

I think the important wording here is "...and becomes a creature enchantment...INSTEAD of ANY OTHER TYPE OF PERMANENT"

It seems to me that until the 1 mana is paid to end that effect it can ONLY be that. therefore negating its ability from the other imprint.

Myr has both imprinted. Myr Welder is the source of both abilities.

You can use the Equip ability to move the Welder around, but activating the X ability won't do anything. Because the Welder doesn't actually have the Equipment type, the creature it's attached to doesn't count as being "equipped" by it. Here are the relevant rules:

702.6a Equip is an activated ability of Equipment cards. "Equip [cost]" means "[Cost]: Attach this permanent to target creature you control. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery."

301.7. If a non-Equipment permanent has an ability that refers to the "equipped creature," that phrase doesnt refer to any creature. Similarly, a non-Fortification permanent that has an ability that refers to the "fortified land" doesnt refer to any land.

But Myr Welder still has the Demonspine abilities, and the Licid second ability, isn't it?

I understand.

Thanx, Rhadamanthus!

What rhadaman is saying is that the myr doesn't become the "equipment" it only gains the "activated ability"...yeah?

So regardless of the rest of the scenario, that first rule negates what you are looking to do with the equipment in the first place. And it has nothing to to with the Licid.

Nothing made Myr Welder lose any abilities, so it will still have both activated abilities of Demonspine Whip. Like I explained above, the Equip ability will work just fine but the pump ability won't do anything when you activate it.

When you brought that up, it made me realize something else about this situation. Note the current Oracle text of Transmogrifying Licid doesn't cause it to gain the "Enchanted creature gets..." static ability as part of the resolution of the activated ability. Because that static ability stands alone on the card, Myr Welder doesn't have it, and the enchanted creature won't get pumped or turned into an artifact.

That seems like a nice job. Revisiting old cards and updating their text to make it relevant to modern-day magic.

I remembered this question. I still have a question about: Myr Welder imprinted both artifacts above, changed to a Aura. OK.

But can I move it around, using the Equip ability?I found this rule:

301.5d An Equipments controller is separate from the equipped creatures controller; the two need not be the same. Changing control of the creature doesnt change control of the Equipment, andvice versa. Only the Equipments controller can activate its abilities. However, if the Equipment grants an ability to the equipped creature (with gains or has), the equipped creatures controller is the only one who can activate that ability.

As I said in the accepted answer: yes, you can use the Equip ability to move it around. I don't get what the rule you're quoting has to do with the question, though. Can you explain a bit more about what you're trying to say?

Ooops, i copied the wrong rule. The correct is:

301.5c An Equipment thats also a creature cant equip a creature. An Equipment that loses the subtype Equipment cant equip a creature. An Equipment cant equip itself. An Equipment that equips an illegal or nonexistent permanent becomes unattached from that permanent but remains on the battlefield. (This is a state-based action. See rule 704.) An Equipment cant equip more than one creature. If a spell or ability would cause an Equipment to equip more than one creature, the Equipments controller chooses which creature it equips.

Okay, I get what you're asking now. I remember hitting that snag when I was researching the question, but the most reliable sources I found agree with my response. "An Equipment that loses the subtype Equipment can't equip a creature" means that it can't affect the creature it's attached to with any abilities referencing the "equipped creature" (reiterated by 301.7, given in my earlier post) and the creature doesn't count as being "equipped" by it (Kor Duelist and friends).

The reason "equip" doesn't also mean "attach an equipment to a creature by means of the Equip ability" is because "equip" isn't one of the keyword actions defined in Section 701, meaning rules text isn't allowed to use it that way. Notice 702.6a from my earlier post only uses the verb "attach" to describe the action taken by resolving the Equip ability ("attach" is one of the defined keyword actions).

And I am so happy he did. Now it all works in a way that actually makes sense to a reasonable person.
