Mutant's Prey

If I played Mutant's Prey on a Phalanx Leader would Heroic trigger and allow my Phalanx Leader to gain a +1/+1 therefore allowing it to fight a target creature I choose?
It is worth noting that if the Phalanx Leader already has a counter and then you target it with Mutant's Prey it will get the counter from heroic before it fights, and will thus be bigger for the battling.

Unfortunately, no.
The first target for Mutant's Prey must be a legal target as you cast the spell. The creature you'd want to use this with would need to already have a +1/+1 counter on it. During this time, Phalanx Leader does not have a +1/+1 counter on it so it cannot even be targeted.
