Murder of Crows' triggered ability

Asked by Emzed 13 years ago

Assume the following situation: I have Murder of Crows on the battlefield and three creatures die at the same time, let's say due to Rolling Temblor . Now Murder of Crows ' triggered ability will go on the stack and I can use it up to three times. But at which point do I have to choose how many times I want to use it? Do I have to decide about that before the first one resolves or can I just start with drawing/discarding a card and then decide if I want to continue?

Second question: If Murder of Crows and another creature die at the same time, does the ability trigger? I am pretty sure it doesn't, but it would be nice to get some feedback.

Okay I just found out the answer to my second question is that the ability does trigger.

1st question : the 3 creatures will put the triggered ability on the stack. You decide if you want to draw at each trigger on the stack.

2nd question : yes it will trigger see this section of the Comprehensive Rules, especialy at the example

603.6dNormally, objects that exist immediately after an event are checked to see if the event matched any trigger conditions. Continuous effects that exist at that time are used to determine what the trigger conditions are and what the objects involved in the event look like. However, some triggered abilities must be treated specially because the object with the ability may no longer be on the battlefield, may have moved to a hand or library, or may no longer be controlled by the appropriate player. The game has to "look back in time" to determine if these abilities trigger. Leaves-the-battlefield abilities, abilities that trigger when a permanent phases out, abilities that trigger when an object that all players can see is put into a hand or library, abilities that trigger specifically when an object becomes unattached, abilities that trigger when a player loses control of an object, and abilities that trigger when a player planeswalks away from a plane will trigger based on their existence, and the appearance of objects, prior to the event rather than afterward. Example:Two creatures are on the battlefield along with an artifact that has the ability "Whenever a creature is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you gain 1 life." Someone plays a spell that destroys all artifacts, creatures, and enchantments. The artifact's ability triggers twice, even though the artifact goes to its owner's graveyard at the same time as the creatures.

Whenever there is a 'may', it is handled in the resolution. Thus you not make the choice until the ability resolves. So yes, you can stop at any point.

That said, there is very little reason to do so because you can simply discard whatever card you draw and thus it is very difficult for the ability to have a negative effect.

woops, heres the rule

Normally, objects that exist immediately after an event are checked to see if the event matched any trigger conditions. Example:

Two creatures are on the battlefield along with an artifact that has the ability "Whenever a creature is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you gain 1 life." Someone plays a spell that destroys all artifacts, creatures, and enchantments. The artifact's ability triggers twice, even though the artifact goes to its owner's graveyard at the same time as the creatures.

Note that Murder of Crows will put three separate instances of its triggered ability onto the stack. It does not put one ability onto the stack that gets used three times. Any time a trigger condition for a triggered ability is met multiple times, that ability will be created on the stack that many times.

Also, whenever multiple permanents enter or leave the battlefield simultaneously, each "sees" the others entering/leaving.

What Epochalyptik said. The last part is how Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle would deal 6 damage whenever Primeval Titan attacked with only 3 Mountains on the field. Also, this is how you gain 4 Life off of two Glimmerpost s with Primeval Titan .
