Multiple Omanths and Landfalls (Glimpse Combo)

Asked by Master_Tame 2 years ago

Can a judge please tell me what happens when a Glimpse of Tomorrow resolves and ends up putting 2 Omnath, Locus of Creations and 5 Islands into play?

On MTGO the following result would take place:

2 Omnaths x 5 lands would produces 10 Omnath Landfall triggers (5 for each Omnath).

Before they are put on the stack the Legend Rule forces us to sacrifice 1 of the Omnaths.

Triggers are then put on the stack and begin to resolve.

The 5 triggers for the Omnath that remains on the battlefield resolve as follows: 1) Gain 4 life, 2) Produce R,G,W,U, 3) Deal 4 Damage, 4) Nothing, 5) Nothing.

The 5 triggers for the Omnath that was sacrificed resolve as follows: 1) Gain 4 Life, 2) Gain 4 Life, 3) Gain 4 Life, 4) Gain 4 Life, 5) Gain 4 Life.

There seems to be some debate as to whether this is the correct resolution of triggers or (the more popular opinion) MTGO is bugged and this is not a correct resolution of triggers. Can an actual judge give me a concrete answer since I now own the Glimpse Combo deck in paper and I don't want to mess this up.

Reference rules: 603.4 (If Clause), 608.2A, 608.2H, 113.7, 113.7A.

Thank you!

If you would like a judge to answer your question, please visit https://chat.magicjudges.org/mtgrules/ As you have posted the question in this rules forum though, I will attempt to clarify the rules.

Rule 603.4 doesn't come into play because it ends by saying:

(The word "if" has only its normal English meaning anywhere else in the text of a card; this rule only applies to an "if" that immediately follows a trigger condition.)

Because the word "if" is further into the ability than immediately following the trigger condition, this whole rule can be ignored for the ability

Rule 608.2a is like whys irrelevant, as it only deals with intervening if clauses described in 603.4.

Rule 608.2h seems to be the relevant part here. The ability is asking the question "How many times has this ability resolved?" Since abilities are connected to their source (it's looking at how many times abilities from the specific Omnath, Locus of Creation and not just any of them). The rule does state to look at the source of the ability as it existed when it was last on the battlefield if it has left, meaning that MTGO is interpreting this to mean you need to look back in time to before any of the triggers resolved. It may be worth asking in the channel mentioned above as it does have judges of various levels who should be able to give a consensus as to whether this is the official and correct interpretation of that rule, as it does mean you could sacrifice an Omnath with multiple triggers on the stack to resolve a specific effect repeatedly. It seems fully reasonable to look at Omnath "as it most recently existed" while still considering the resolutions that have already taken place. I would err toward the latter explanation, but MTGO went with the former.

113.7 and 113.7a don't really provide more detail here, just that the source of the landfall ability is Omnath, that the fact he left the battlefield doesn't stop the ability from resolving, and you can use last known information about it if necessary.
